Wie viel kostet eine Woche New York?

How much does a week in New York cost?

AUTHOR SANEL HUSKANOVIC / CATEGORY COST POINT / PUBLISHED: AUGUST-12-2019

There are reports that President Obama and his family may move to New York after his term ends. Unfortunately, the city is so expensive that he is looking for another ex-president as a roommate.

New York is one of the most expensive cities in the world and budgeting for a trip to New York is quite complicated. You'll need to consider different expenses, some more important than others.

I've put together three types of budgets: tight, average and generous. This for a couple who decided to spend a week in New York (7 nights).

Flight + accommodation + food + sightseeing + shopping + extras

It's an estimate of what you'll spend based on my own experience, so at least you have a guideline or idea.

How much money do you need for a week trip to New York City?

Factors you should consider before traveling

First, you need to consider when you want to travel to New York City. Flights and accommodation prices vary depending on the season.

Best time to travel to New York?

The cheapest season is from January to March.
The seasons that attract more tourists are school holidays (Easter, Summer, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year).

Accommodation is another important factor. Depending on your budget, you can pay anywhere from around $90 per night to $250 to $300 or a few thousand dollars for high-end hotels.

Lifestyle is also an important factor. Eating sandwiches and $1 pizza or dining at expensive restaurants, seeing a show on Broadway, going sightseeing, all of this and more is also of great importance.

The 7 factors that seem most important to me are:

- the flight (round trip)
- Accommodation (hostels, hotels, apartments ...)
- Transportation (from and to the airport...)
- Meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
- Sightseeing, visits to attractions and shows
- Shopping
- Additional costs (bars, confectionery ...).

Flight

The flights are generally cheaper in the low season, early booking sometimes has an advantage, but not always. It is always advisable to check the homepage of the different airlines. I wrote a separate blog about flights. click

Tight budget

$450 to $600 per person, or $900 to $1,200 round-trip if traveling with your partner.

Average budget

The average price of airline tickets is between $600 and $800 per person or between $1200 and $1600 for a couple.

Generous budget

Prices are higher in high season, or if you want to fly business or first class, in this case you should consider a budget of around $900 to $1200 per person or $1800 to $2400 for a round trip for a couple .

Accommodation

New York attracts many tourists, prices vary from month to month. You could find a room for $150 off-season and pay $250-$300 for the sameroom in high season! Basically, hotels in Queens and Brooklyn are slightly cheaper or offer better comfort for the same price. I have written more about hotels for you here. click

Tight budget

You can find a room in a private home (on NY Habitat or Airbnb ) or stay in a hostel. The night costs between $45 - $50 per person or between $630 and $700 for a week with your partner.

Average budget

The average New York visitor will book a hotel in the $170 to $250 per night range, which works out to between $1,190 and $1,750 per week for a couple.

Generous budget

Luxury hotels typically start from $400 and up per night. A week in a luxury hotel will cost at least 3,000 USD.

Airport transfer

Your first expense in New York will be the transfer between the airport and your accommodation. The cheapest way is public transportation via the Airtrain and subway, costing $16 round trip per person or $32 for a couple. Then there is the shuttle service - click , taxi or UBER, private transfer etc. I have written down everything about airport transport for you here JFK and Newark

Then you have to get around New York either by subway, taxi or, for example, city bike.

Tight budget

If you take the subway Airtrain option to the airport and only use the "unlimited" 7-day Metrocard in NYC, it will cost you $49 per week per person or $98 per couple.

Average budget

The average Joe takes the shuttle, takes the subway and takes a taxi 2-3 times in a week, meaning most of you will have to set aside around $150 - $200 for transportation in NYC.

Generous budget

If you prefer to be picked up at the airport by a driver , then take a taxi back to the airport, use the Metrocard unlimited for 7 days, and use a taxi 5 to 10 times per week, your budget will be between US$400 and US$500. Dollar one a week with your partner.

Nutrition

Not that easy to calculate. Some are happy with a $3 hot dog, others prefer $200 meals at a good restaurant.
Let's say breakfast at a Starbucks costs $5-6 per person (a simple coffee and pastry). At 7 Eleven, Dunkin Donuts, Prêt-à-Manger... you pay a little less.

Eating at a fast food restaurant costs between $8 and $10 for a main course + drink + dessert.
There are small restaurants or delicatessens where the main course (pizza, pasta, meat, ...) costs between $10 and $12 per person. A full meal costs $20 to $26 per person.

When it comes to restaurants, any big city can also be very expensive. But there are many with full menus (starters + main course + dessert) between $50 and $60 per person.

Tight budget

One breakfast and two fast food meals or $25 to $30 per day per person or $275 to $460 per week with your partner.

Average budget

For breakfast, a snack and a small restaurant, you and your partner will pay between $30 and $45 per person per day or between $460 and $650 per week.

Generous budget

If you want a good breakfast, a small restaurant for lunch and a nicer one for dinner, consider $50-90 per person per day or $700-$1260 for the week with your partner.

Sightseeing

There are millions of things to do in NYC, from helicopter rides , NBA, guided tours, observation decks and much more. Therefore, a passport may be particularly useful for a first visit. I compared them all for you here. click

Tight budget

The most sensible thing to do is to purchase a pass, simply click on the link above, in the comparison you can choose the right pass for you. Cost about $250 for both.

Average budget

I would also recommend a pass here, and some people would also like to experience a helicopter flight or a tour . We offer this service in German, check out meintripnachnewyork.com . Depending on your preference, you will spend between 350-600 per couple.

Generous budget

If you want to treat yourself to the sights and a private tour then it will cost you around 800 - 1000 USD as a couple.

Shopping

If there's one thing they know how to do in New York, it's attracting people to the wonderful shops and selling beautiful clothes, jewelry and the like. In addition, the prices are very attractive and you quickly end up spending a little more than you can afford, in a good case double your entire savings, in a bad case. Impossible to say what you'll spend.

Tight budget

If you're not buying much more than travel souvenirs, expect to spend $30 to $65.

Average budget

If shopping at stores like Century 21 and mainstream brands, I would expect to spend $250 to $400 per pair for the entire week.

Generous budget

If you like high-end clothing or the shops on 5th Avenue, it can easily run around $1,000 or more per pair.

Extras and nightlife

Things like the nightlife or little things like cupcakes, cookies, etc. are also something you have to do or try in New York. Nightlife in New York, in particular, is expensive and complicated to navigate, as some rooftops, clubs and bars only allow people on the list. Prices for a drink are usually around 15 USD.

Tight budget

If you want to eat a typical US cupcake from time to time, drink a coffee and have been to a rooftop at least once, expect between $50 and $65 for two people.

Average budget

If you want to take the rooftop tour and want an "extra" several times a week, consider paying $130 to $200 per couple for a week.

Generous budget

If you want to go out for coffee every day, go to a bar, and allow yourself a sweet treat every day, then expect to pay between $250 and $330 per couple for the entire week.
